Standing On My Own

Standing On My Own Chapter 1

1Here I am… I can’t believe it… This can’t possibly be the right place… Can it? I am surrounded by miles and miles of lush greenery, and it smells like strawberries in the air. A car came and picked me up from my apartment this morning, to my surprise, and dropped me off at the large gate of this estate.

2As I make my way to the door I begin to wonder just who exactly my employer is. I asked the driver earlier how he found me when I never even managed to tell my new boss where I lived. The car arrived a few hours after my encounter with him at the park. And even though I didn’t have much to pack, I still needed to sort some things out with my landlord. It was surprisingly easy to say goodbye. The driver just laughed and said, “We have our ways.” He then pointed me towards the main entrance and walked off in another direction with my luggage.

3After what feels like miles of trekking, I reach the doors. My heart begins to pound in my chest and I begin to feel nervous. What exactly am I here to do again? Be a maid? This is a very large house… What if I mess up? What if I can’t handle it? I lift my shaking hands to the doorbell and press it gently. I hear the most beautiful bell ring and then after a few seconds the sound of footsteps draws nearer.

4“Hello sweetheart!” A woman exclaims. Without realizing it I had begun rocking from heel to heel in anxiety. “Nervous?” she asks, looking at my feet. “It’s alright, most people are, follow me to your room.” she said with a smile. “By the way, I am May, but you can call me Nana May since I’ve been the nanny here for many years.” she added.

5Unable to find my voice, I just nod and follow the woman into the house. She takes me up several flights of stairs, and to a long hall. She sees me stare at the shining pottery I see on the right side of the hall, and extends her hands and says, “I polished those this morning. Do you like them? The little master got it on his trip to Rome.” “Little master?” I ask. “Oh, look. You do have a voice.” she laughed. “I was beginning to worry. Follow me”

6She began to lead me down the hall. “Yes, the little master told me that he was expecting a guest in the house today, I prepared your room and everything. He told me to tell you not to wander around since the house is quite large. Even I get confused sometimes and I’ve been working here for 24 years!” she said while scratching her head.

7“Here we are!” she said, leading me down yet another hallway. This time we approached a door and she led me inside.

8“This is your bathroom.”

9
I had to blink to make sure that what I was seeing was real. It was half the size of my apartment!

10The view was spectacular. I had to take in a deep breath to calm myself or I would start hyperventilating.

11“Now we’ve finally reached your bedroom. Go on in and take a look!” she said while nudging me forward.

12I took the small steps needed to get to the door and stepped inside…

13I just stared blankly at what I saw.

14The room was so beautiful! Not too colorful, not too dull, and exquisitely decorated and furnished.

15A fireplace? In a bedroom? I didn’t even know that was possible. Books about every region in the world were stacked neatly for me to enjoy in alphabetical order.

16A circular bed that was crafted to fit perfectly into the wall was by the windows. Light from the sun glowed on the bed.

17“Do you like it?” she asked. “Because if you don’t there are plenty of other rooms for you to choose from.” “Are you kidding? I love it!” I exclaimed. “The lighting… the paint on the walls… Everything is done to perfection.” I said with a smile. “Glad you like it darling! Now, before I leave you come here a second so I can explain some things to you.” Nana May said.

18I walked to her side and just smiled right her. I was so happy I couldn’t bottle it up inside. I was the type of person who smiled at the littlest of things, so something like this made me ecstatic! “How are you feeling?” she asked.

19“I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that I’m here.” I said.

20“Yes, I know what you mean. I still remember the day I first walked in through those doors.” she said laughing. She began telling me some stories to inform me of how it was around here. Her presence alone was calming, but hearing her speak made me even less tense.

21We both laughing until a speaker I couldn’t see echoed through the house and delivered the message: -NANA MAY, PLEASE COME DOWN TO THE FOYER. YOU ARE NEEDED. BUTLER CAFFREY WILL COME AND FILL IN THE GUEST- “Guess that is my cue to go!” she said. “We’ll talk later. I promise.” she said. “Alright…” I said. I didn’t want her to leave me alone just yet. She made me feel comfortable.

22She pulled me into a sudden hug and said, “You aren’t like the others. I really think I am going to like you!” and with that, she walked off with a wave and a smile.

23I decided to preoccupy myself with the fireplace until the Butler came.

24When I finally got it to light, it immediately filled the room with heat and made every part of my body tingle. Then there was a knock on my door.

25I decided that putting out the fire would be a good idea just because I didn’t want it to look like I was already taking advantage of the house’s luxuries. I’d like to make a good impression with everyone I meet. Speaking of which, just how many people work here?

26So I quickly put out the fire and walked over to the door and opened it, while taking a step back.

27“Ms. Arianna, we have work to do. I’d appreciate it if you’d follow me, and keep up. We need to be fast but this is still going to be a long time. We need to make sure you are qualified to work here.” the man, I’m assuming named Caffrey, said. Wait. Qualified? Wait a sec, so if I’m not, does that mean I get kicked out of here? That jerk didn’t mention anything about qualifications… I just hope this doesn’t end in tears.. my tears for getting too excited over something I wasn’t even entirely sure I had in the first place.

Thanks for reading! I remember writing this story sooo long ago, it was one of my favorites to work on. I particularly liked this room, so simple yet pretty~ Anyways, hope you enjoyed. Take care~

  1. The room was awesome, I must admit. Wouldn’t expect a maid to live in such a place. If this is anything like Broken, then I just really have to wait until I get answers, because this is really becoming too good to be true. But yeah… I’m definitely seeing a trend in your stories, and I’m getting a feel of what to expect with your writing. I really do hope you finish any of these stories! *crosses fingers for a solution to your technical problems*

By the way, I noticed that you have a lot of pictures every chapter. I’m such a child, but I do love picture-heavy stories. Lol. I really appreciate the work you put into it, because well.. it does take a lot of effort to get these screenshots and put it in the words!

    1. You are such a doll ❤ haha yeah most of my stories have an excess of screenshots, which, if I were writing them now I'd feel the need to remove one or two since they are essentially the same scene with a slightly different action going on. It was extremely time consuming for sure but I had lots of fun working on them, thanks 🙂

    1. Nana May was one of my favorite creations 😢 Even when I wasn’t using her for the story she was chatting with other sims or cooking and just being a ray of sunshine~ I can’t for the life of me remember if the house was in-game or if I downloaded it but Arianna’s room was my first experimentation in interior design and I’d love to find both the house and that circle bed again 😫
