Standing On My Own

Standing On My Own Chapter 5

1Who would’ve thought that I’d be sitting here in this tub, rubbing myself with lavender body wash, with a job, a new home, and for the first time in a long time… a sufficient amount of money…

2– 2 HOURS EARLIER –
“Wait… I passed?” I asked incredulously… “Yeah…” he said with a smile. “And I could’ve told you sooner if you didn’t storm off so quickly.”

3“All I did was shove you and leave… What does that have to do with anything?” I asked genuinely. “Listen Arianna, if there is one thing you should know about me, it’s that I don’t do things without reason. The reason for giving you this test will reveal itself with time…” he stated. “…if you stick around long enough to find out.” he added with a smile. “By the way, my name is Jesse… Jesse Wayne.”

4No way. Jesse… as in THE Jesse Wayne?!! Son of the prime minister Dean Wayne… I know the minister by face, but I don’t remember how his family looks… I should really pay more attention to politics… I suddenly found it hard to look at him in the eye.

5The more I stood in his presence the more I realized just how important he was, and how disrespectful I was. Even though he was in the wrong, I felt the need to apologize. “Listen about earlier…” I began, still averting his eyes… “Don’t worry about it.” he said dismissively. When I snuck a glance at him, I noticed how incredibly good looking he was. I knew he wasn’t an ordinary teen, but this was still larger than I had imagined.

6Now he and I are on relatively good terms, after chatting for a bit, and I’ve been fully instated as a worker in the household. Also, I have the next three days off starting tomorrow since it is going to be Friday and Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are my days off according to Mr. Caffrey…

7– 1 HOUR EARLIER –
“Nana May and I have been called to Rome to help Mr. Prime Minister Dean and Mrs. Wayne hold a gala dinner in one of their estates. Though you have the next few days off, be sure to keep an eye on the young master. Also here is your starting fee…” Caffrey said while handing me $1,000 in cash. “Mr. Caffrey I’ve hardly started. I don’t deserve this.” I said. “Oh please, my child this money is equivalent to the value of paper to the Wayne’s. Think of it as a small token for your hard work. Use it as you wish…” he replied.

8Well, all in all, I think today was quite long, and life changing. Weird to think I ran into Jesse only this morning… The first thing I’m planning on doing, after a good night’s rest, is hit the mall and stock up on shoes since I only own 2 pairs. Maybe I’ll buy a few new outfits while I’m at it.

9After changing, combing through my wet locks, and brushing my teeth I arrived next to my huge bed. I still can’t believe this is mine… On the far left side of the bed there was a drawer with extra pillows and sheets. I pulled out a small golden pillow and hopped onto bed.

10I crossed my arms over my waist and took a deep breath… My face was frozen into a smile, I’m so happy I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep.

11But as time passed, my overwhelmingly tired body began to show signs of drowsiness, and I decided it would be best if I went to sleep. I placed the golden pillow back into the drawer, and pulled out a large blue sheet with a matching larger pillow and placed it across the bed.

12Within seconds, I was out like a light… I have a feeling I’ll get the best night’s sleep I’ve had in years.

13The next morning I was greeted by the warm sunshine. I awoke with a smile and walked over to my bathroom.

14I changed into one of the limited number of outfits I have, and pulled my hair back into a ponytail. I gave my reflection one last glance before heading out the door. Since I am working in an important household, I should present myself better, and the first step to doing that is appearance, which I am currently lacking in at the moment. So that’s why today’s priority is the mall.

15It was only when I reached the gate that I realized I had no mode of transportation and absolutely no clue on how to get to where I needed to go.

16I stepped out onto the road and felt the morning chill…

17There was an entirely new world here for me to explore, and I was ready to face it head on… even if I did end up getting lost along the way…

19I headed south for a few blocks until I came across a beautiful park. There was a little girl swinging happily.

20Watching her smile and have fun made me smile… but as I stared longer at her and the serene landscape behind her I felt an odd sensation… It was as if a sheet of glass shattered on my head. Memories that I have no recollection of were attempting to resurface… My head began to feel dizzy… The floor was spinning and the world went blurry.

21I stormed away from the park and came to an intersection.

22Suddenly it was as if I knew where I was going. I am positive that I’ve never been here before… and yet, the streets… the flashing lights… everything gave me an odd sense of déjà vu.

23I didn’t know what it meant, but I at least had a sense of where I was going now… I smiled to myself and took the first right because I had a feeling it would lead me to the mall… And what do you know… it did….

24I shopped for hours, over indulging on luxuries I probably didn’t need. It was the first time in a long time I could buy the things that caught my eye instead of staring at them from outside the window pane. At around 4:00 p.m, I arrived back at the estate. The man at the gate smiled and took my items from me like he did when I first arrived here.

25I walked up to my room, but before entering it, a door at the end of the hall caught my eye.

26I approached it quietly and walked in, it was a little study area that was warm and toasty. There were some books, a seating area, and other miscellaneous items scattered around.

27I closed the door quietly and noticed a staircase adjacent to the door. I had a feeling I should not be wandering around, but my curiosity overpowered me and next thing I knew, I was climbing the stairs two at a time.

28I arrived on a floor that had book shelves filled with magazines, newspapers, and any and all reading material you could imagine.

29I walked over to the magazine rack and scanned the covers. I never found magazines interesting; they were filled with pointless pieces of information about how to be in successful relationships and beautiful, both of which I was not. However, one particular magazine caught my eye and I took it back to the newly discovered sitting room.

31I took a seat, and looked closely at the cover. It was a modeling magazine and the girl on the cover was beautiful.

32
She had a perfect body, and was advertising a new line of lingerie. She had long flowing hair, and a facial expression that expressed mystery and beauty. If someone like me who never read magazines could sense her aura, then I’m sure this girl was a star. It said to turn to page 76 to read about the model. I flipped there immediately.

33There was a picture of her with a black tank top. She was smiling, and was even more beautiful up close. I took a break from admiring her complexion and read the article below.

p.76

Jean Summers is taking the world by storm. Not even in her 20’s this beautiful teen is sweeping the nation with her beauty and sense of style. Daughter of wealthy entrepreneurs Kyle and Emma Summers. Jean has been making a fortune of her own as her parents travel the world with their very successful businesses. Jean was born in…

I stopped reading the article, and took a moment to think. This girl was so fortunate, not only was she beautiful and rich, but she also had a family… Regardless of whether or not she got to see them often.

34I closed the magazine and saved that page for later. I looked out the window at this new world I was in… Growing up I had always accepted the fact that I would never feel the love from parents or the touch of a mother. I don’t even know my last name, and I never bothered to try and seek answers. But now, for the first time, I’m not worried about paying bills or finding a job… I actually have the time to think about it… and the only thoughts crossing my mind are: who am I.. and why am I standing on my own?

Thanks for reading! Hope you are enjoying the story thus far~ I promise some new characters will come soon! Take care.
xoxo Amy

  1. You’re standing on your own, because that’s the title of this story, darling. Lol. Uhm… hmm… this whole chapter I kept wondering why she wasn’t at work… cleaning. Who’s going to make Jesse’s breakfast?! Who’s at the house cleaning? Lol… Ah well… next!

  2. I’m still mad about Jesse. Arianna forgave him too easily- I don’t like how she felt the need to apologise after she found out about him being the prime minister’s son. No matter how rich he is, he shouldn’t have done that and come onto her so suddenly. Whatever the answer is, I think there could have been a less creepy way of testing her.
The job sounds so nice, with everything pretty much paid for her. I wonder how hard the cleaning is gonna get…

    1. Yeah Arianna is a bit more easily swayed/submissive than my other female characters – given her upbringing. Looking back, Jesse really must’ve seemed like a creepy perv or something lol, but in my mind I musta thought it was mysterious lmao.
