Sight Chapter 2: Moving “Onwards”

6:52 p.m. | Epic Cinemas
“I think the movie wasn’t as good as the praise it’s been getting.” Cailean says with a yawn. “You could say that again.” Mai adds.

“Were you even watching? You and Chad seemed otherwise preoccupied with your make out session.” Gus says with a wink. “You jealous?” Mai says brushing her hair back and grinning at Gus.

“Well I thought it’d be scarier.” Kimberly says. “You sure about that? You could hardly keep your eyes open; you were so frightened.” Cailean says while poking Kimberly. “No I wasn’t. Knock it off.” She replies.

“We should probably start heading out to eat before it gets too crowded.” Chad says. “Yeah, the pub should be around the corner, they are known for having the best fries.” Gus says.

“I could eat anything at this point.” Mai adds. “Eating your boyfriend’s face didn’t fill you up?” Gus teases. “Let’s go.” Chad says with a slight grin.

7:00 p.m. | Martha’s Pub
“Good, it’s not super crowded yet.” Mai says upon entering, “Let’s sit over here.” As she is about to lead the group to a table, Chad squeezes her hand that he’s holding. “Hey babe, isn’t that your rude coworker?” He asks and the group turns their attention to the distance.

“She’s not rude, babe. But I think you’re right, it looks like her.” Mai replies. “It doesn’t seem like they’re having a particularly friendly conversation, does it?” She adds.

“You… you rude little girl!” Ms. Maverly screams “Look, I’m just doing what she asked me to…” Aislyn attempts to explain.

Her words are cut off by Ms. Maverly’s hand coming hard across her cheek.

“How dare you!” Ms. Maverly says with a shaky voice – tears welling in her eyes. She storms off, leaving Aislyn stunned and shocked still behind her.

“I told you, the girl is a lunatic.” Kimberly says with a snicker. “I’m going to go talk to her.” Gus says. “Why on earth would you do that?” Cailean asks, turning to Gus.

“I’m seizing an opportunity.” Gus says with a wicked grin while cracking his knuckles. “Ugh, you are so desperate.” Kimberly says.

“I wouldn’t if I were you…” Cailean begins to say, but Gus already begins walking over to Aislyn who still hasn’t moved. “A woman is a woman.” Gus says back.

In Cailean’s mind, he’d’ve thought she would like to be left alone after whatever just transpired. He couldn’t deny that apart of him was slightly interested in knowing what exactly happened. He often came here with his mother and knows Martha isn’t one to ever raise her voice… But he knew better than to get involved.

Aislyn doesn’t make any signs of having snapped out of whatever she was thinking until someone is standing right behind her. As she turns to leave, her face still stinging from where Ms. Maverly’s hand made contact, she nearly runs into him.

“I’m sorry.” She says as she steadies herself. “No worries.” The man says back in a deep voice. He’s rather handsome. She thinks to herself.

“Are you alright? I saw what happened from back there.” He says, gesturing to where he walked over from. Great. Aislyn thinks.

“Yes, I’m fine.” She replies. Out of the corner of her eye she could see the elderly woman following her sister that was storming off.

“It’s late. Would you like me to walk you back to wherever you live?” The man in front of her asks, snapping her away from the scene outside.

“That’s an odd offer considering we’ve never met before.” Aislyn says.

“I don’t bite.” He teases. “I’m Augustus Allan, Gus for short. You work with Mai don’t you? I’m a friend; she’s over there.”

Aislyn, realizing word of her humiliation would probably spread given that people who knew her have seen what just transpired, doesn’t bother looking back.

“Yeah I do… look I’d hate to pull you away from your group. So don’t worry about it.” She says as she turns her eyes away from his blazing gaze, feeling oddly flustered.

“I offered, and the pleasure’d be all mine, I insist.” Gus says.

Aislyn found his pushiness odd. If he’s friends with Mai surely he’s heard something about her… Whispers of her insanity. Rumors of her craziness. He probably came here to see if they were true. The realization drains the blush from her face.

“Like I said, I’m fine. Have a nice night.” With her usual composure back, she turns around him and makes her way towards the door.

“Wait.” Gus calls out, but Aislyn’s already out of sight before he can get another word out.

“She sure is something.” Gus says to himself.

“Ouch, she rejected you?” Kimberly says. “I guess even loons have standards.”

“Oh shut up.” Gus retorts. “She’ll warm up to me eventually. It’s only a matter of time.”

“Why do you even care? It’s obvious she’s got issues. Didn’t you see what just happened?” Kimberly asks while pointing to the door.

“Well for starters, she’s not hard on the eyes. And from how you make it sound, she’s probably not very experienced in relationships; I love a good challenge.” Gus says.

“So this is some sort of game to see if you can win her over? And then what?” Kimberly asks.

“I’ll cross that bridge, once I get there.” Gus says. “And I will get there.”

“Well, good luck with that.” Kimberly says half-heartedly. “Anyway, let’s head back to the group, I came to get you since everyone already ordered.”

“Lead the way.” Gus says.

8:00 p.m. | Oldmerrow Graveyard
I always tell myself I won’t get involved, and things like this always happen because I weaken my resolve. Aislyn thinks.

Oh whatever, it’s not like this is the first time… And I doubt it’ll be the last either… As Aislyn loses herself in thought, the elderly woman from earlier appears.

“There you are. Well I did what you asked.” At the expense of my face. Aislyn thinks. “I hope it was worth it.” She says.

“Believe me dearie, it is more worth it than you know.” The elderly woman says with a sad smile.

Aislyn sighs, and gives a smile of her own in return. It’s moments like these that end up weakening her ability to say no.

For as long as Aislyn has had this ability to see ghosts, which was only for the last ten years or so, the ghosts of Oldmerrow who heard of her from one another have been constantly pestering her.

They always approach her with requests that they themselves couldn’t complete in their time alive. Whenever Aislyn gives in to their tasks, which is often, their souls find peace and they move “onwards” at the site where their bodies lie. Until then, however, they wander the earth as ghosts.

8:27 p.m. | Lacy Thompson’s Grave
“This is where we part.” The woman says, standing atop her resting place.

“Your name is Lacy?” Aislyn asks. “It was.” Lacy corrects. “Silly me, I burdened you with a favor and failed to tell you my own name.”

“Don’t worry about it…” Aislyn says. “Well, I hope you find peace now, Ms. Lacy.”

“You know I will.” Lacy responds.

And in a flash of bright light she fades before Aislyn and disappears.

“Goodbye now…” A faint voice whispers in the wind.

And Aislyn is left completely alone in the quiet, still night.

3:31 a.m. | Aislyn’s Room
Too exhausted to shower or even let her hair down after her walk back from the graveyard, Aislyn falls asleep atop her sheets after changing.

Barely clinging to consciousness, she feels a rush of warm air ripple across her body.

“Morning, Sunshine.” A voice whispers in her ear.

Thanks for reading! I’m hoping the plot isn’t confusing so far. I have this elaborate world planned out in my mind and I’m not sure if I’m over or under-explaining things, feel free to ask any questions if the latter is the case 🙂

Also feel free to let me know your general thoughts and comments thus far. These beginning chapters might have a bit of slow buildup since I’m introducing characters and the baseline/background for the story, but it’ll pick up once you are all well informed, I promise. Take care~
xoxo Amy

  1. Whoa!!! First of all, who is that mysterious man/ghost next to her in the last picture?! A late boyfriend maybe? Someone she won’t give in to his requests so that she can keep him close?
I’m so intrigued by all this!
I also wanted to say that I really enjoyed how Aislyn blew Gus off. What a jerk! But that other guy, Cailean, seems much more considerate and polite. I think I see the love triangle forming (and Gus is not in it)! 😄

    1. Yay, I’m happy you like it so far~ One or two things you touched on may come into play but I shall refrain from saying more 😜 Haha I’m glad you like Cailean more because I’m *cough* not so discreetly pushing him 😏

  2. Aislyn is so pretty! And she sees ghosts, too! I love it. I wonder who that man is cuddling in bed with her? Is he a ghost? :O

Aislyn is smart, too, to say no to Gus. I can’t wait to see where you go with this story.

  3. I am happy that Aislyn didn’t go with Gus since he didn’t seem to really care about her. I wonder what quest she had to get done for Lacy O.o Something quite harsh for her sister, it seems.
Who’s the one cuddling her? Wow!

  4. Ahhh! Who is that guy in the last picture?! I wonder if he’s a ghost or real…
Oh dear, poor Aislyn getting slapped when she was only trying to help. I also wonder what she said and why it made Martha so angry.
*rolls eyes* Gus, you player, go away. He’s obviously just interested for her looks and I’m glad Aislyn rejected him. Cailean, on the other hand… I’m liking this boy more and more!
    Great chapter 😊

    1. He’s a ghost~ you’ll get his whole backstory soon 😉 And you’ll also hear what exactly she said. Haha glad you like Cailean too 🙂 I shall be pushing him more as the story progresses ☺️ Thanks!

  5. Ooh this is interesting… I wonder what Aislyn said to make Martha so angry. Haha, Gus. You’re such a player! Only going for the looks *shakes head disapprovingly* I was afraid for a moment she would accept going with him. I’m glad she didn’t! I think my favourite so far would be Cailean. He seems responsible and mature!
Who is that boy? I can’t wait to find out!
    Great chapter ❤️

    1. I plan on revealing what exactly she said next chapter along with the details as to who the guy at the end is~ Haha yeah, Gus is quite shallow to say the least XD Glad you like Cailean too, I’m planing on giving him more of a role in the story as it progresses, hehe. Thank you! 😀 ~

  6. I think the pacing is just right. I don’t mind a slow burn in stories as long as the payoff is good. This really is a great-looking cast of characters! I can’t get over how gorgeous everyone looks!

I’m looking forward to the depth you’ll give these characters. Especially Gus.

I’m also so drawn to Aislyn. There’s just something about her! I think she’s my favorite of all your main characters so far.

That guy spooning her… If he’s not her boyfriend or fiancee or husband or something, then I find it really creepy that he would just climb into her bed like that. Abusive ex? My stomach is in knots.

    More please!

    1. Thank you! 🙂 ❤ I'm hoping the payoff shall be worth it – just not sure how long it'll take to get there as of yet. There's definitely more to Gus and Aislyn and the new fellow you shall meet soon 😉 Glad you're liking them so far~

      1. I’m sure it will be! I can’t say enough how much I like the way you develop your characters and give them depth, so I’m excited to meet any character you introduce. There’s always so much more to them than meets the eye.

  7. Ummm hi, hello. I was gonna say something more substantial but everything got wiped out by this randomly appearing person in her bed. WELL I NEED TO KNOW, NOW. This story is such a fun read! I’m really enjoying it, but dang I am not a fan of Gus. He really needs a huge heaping helping of humbleness and humility. He’s seems pretty into himself, and not very respectful of women? Hmm. But besides that, I really like Aislyn’s character so far. She really does seem to want to help these people genuinely, despite what it might be costing her.

    1. Aww thanks for saying that, I’m glad you’re liking it so far 😊 Haha, your impression of Gus shall probably continue to be negative for a while, he definitely rubs people the wrong way. He’s as cocky as they come 😆 Aislyn on the other hand is as selfless as can be~ Her willingness to help will eventually take a toll on her, but I’ll refrain from saying too much on that for now, hehe. Thanks for reading!

  8. Well, I am a new reader and I have to say, both of the first posts i have read have kept me looking for more! Loving the way you leave them teasing us! As far as the characters, obviously Gus and Aislyn stand out the most thus far, but I am highly amused by him.. even if he is a bit cocky lol. I feel for Aislyn! It must be hard hearing people who need you, and you’re the only one who can help; yet when you do, you’re often ostracized for it!

    1. Hello! My apologies for the belated welcome~ I’m on a bit of an indefinite hiatus at the moment and haven’t been checking in here that frequently 😅
I’m glad you’re enjoying the story so far! Haha Gus is definitely an overly confident guy, he’ll probably get on your nerves at some point, as will Aislyn 😂 Unfortunately her ability will often put her in awkward situations. Thanks so much for reading! 😄

  9. Oh!… So JD is a ghost. I thought he could be a vampire at first

I see where you going with this now. it kind of reminds me of a tv series. but that had a vampire and a werewolf in it and they were all living in the same house

“Sight” is a clever title and the eye in the “g” is a clue to the story 🙂

    1. Yup! He’s a ghost 😊 The only supernatural elements in this story will be the spirits/ghosts of people who passed. No vampires or werewolves here~ That sounds like an interesting show though! Thank you ☺️ It took me some tinkering before I was satisfied with the logo, haha.
